Stoptober 2020 – Living Well Smoke Free

2020 marks the year Stoptober has supported more than 2 million people in England to quit smoking, since the campaign first launched in 2012.  This year, more than ever, due to COVID-19 and the approaching flu season it has never been more important to quit.

There are several positive benefits related to quitting smoking; it reduces your risk of illness, disability or death caused by cancer, heart or lung disease. It will also protect the health of the people around you by reducing their exposure to second-hand smoke. In addition to the health benefits, quitting smoking will also save you money – the average smoker saves £150 a month when they quit.

This Stoptober, North Yorkshire County Council’s smokefree service, Living Well Smokefree, are aiming to help as many people as possible reach their goal of quitting for good. The service is currently running remotely which has had a positive impact on those who are trying to quit, by providing guidance and support on their journey. If you would like to refer somebody in to the service, please call 01609 797272 or use the referral form provided. One service user, who quit smoking during the first national lockdown said, “I didn’t have any faith in myself and I thought I would give it a go.  I thought it would just be a chat, but it’s been great”

“I tried about 10 years ago with patches but there’s never been anybody to talk to until now. I’ve been to the doctors before to get a prescription but the Living Well Smokefree advisor is there to support you. You think it’s just you; its willpower, but it’s nice to have someone to ring and someone to check on me and be supportive.”

The Living Well Smokefree advisors are always more than happy to help, “Supporting clients to take control of their smoking demons and work towards a healthier future is incredibly rewarding.” The advisors will work around you and will arrange time with you to fit around your lifestyle.

“It is important as a service that we are able to be flexible to meet client’s needs, especially in the ever changing circumstances we currently find ourselves in.”

You can contact Living Well Smokefree 5 days a week on 01609 797272 but in addition, for the month of October, the Living Well Smokefree advisors will be available between 6pm-7.30pm on the dates below to answer your questions.  So if you are thinking of taking part in Stoptober, quitting smoking or you would just like to discuss anything related to becoming Smokefree pick up the phone and contact the service.  We can’t wait to hear from you!
